Northern Illinois University freshman Keegan Hayes (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
This marks the first time in her career that Hayes has earned the MAC honor. She is also the second Huskie to pick up a weekly award from the conference, as Kayti Grable was named Player of the Week Feb. 10.
Hayes put together a great week in the circle for the Huskies down in Florida. In six appearances and five starts, the Naperville, Illinois, native went 4-1 with a 0.72 ERA over 29.1 innings. Hayes opened the week with a complete game, 2-1 victory over Bucknell in which she allowed just one unearned run against the Bison. After a rough outing at #20 UCF, the freshman bounced back with a 2-0 shutout of Yale.
On Saturday, Hayes put together a complete game shutout of Canisius, scattering four hits over seven innings en route to a 2-0 win over the Golden Griffins. Hayes threw two innings of scoreless relief against Quinnipiac, then registered three strikeouts and allowed just two hits over five innings in an 8-1 win over UMass Lowell.
The Huskies return to the field Thursday when they host North Dakota State at 1:30 p.m. at Mary M. Bell Field. Admission for all NIU softball games is free.
